View of Schrecksee

The lake lies at 1813 m in a basin-like high valley, which is bordered by the Knappenkopf, Kirchendach and Kälbelespitze in the east, Kastenkopf and Lahnerkopf in the south and Älpelekopf in the west. The basin opens towards the northwest: after a small threshold, the terrain drops in a rock step by 300 meters to the Taufersalpe. The lake lies entirely in Bavaria, the border with Tyrol runs almost 300 meters east of the lake on the Kirchendachsattel.
