Built at the end of the 19th century to cross the Douro River and connect Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia, the Dom Luis I Bridge has a double-level metal structure. The author of the work, the Belgian engineer Théophile Seyrig, was a collaborator of Gustave Eiffel, whose architectural style influenced the design of the bridge.

The Douro River is crossed by several bridges as it flows through Porto. The most famous of these is the Dom Luís I Bridge (Ponte Dom Luís I in Portuguese), which connects the city with Vila Nova de Gaia. Inaugurated at the end of the 19th century, this iron bridge is one of Porto's most iconic landmarks.
