The first writings on the chapel, dedicated to St. Niklaus, date back to 1457. It served the pilgrims from the Formazza valley as a stopover, on the way over the Passo San Giacomo, the Bedretto valley, the Tremola valley, to the Gotthard Pass to honor St. Gotthard.
