A castle with a monastery has been attested here on the summit of the Hegau volcano since the 10th century. The striking cone of the 686 m high Hohentwiel is crowned by a ruin of the mighty fortress. Napoleon had the 9 hectare facility razed in 1801. From up here you have a fantastic view of the volcanic cone-shaped landscape of the Hegau.

Very close to Hohentwiel Fortress, the ruins of Hohenkrähen Castle also sit perched on a volcanic cone. The castle was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War.
