The castle was probably built in the first half of the 13th century, possibly by the noble lords of Twiel. It is mentioned in 1250 in the possession of the Lords of Rosenegg and in 1335 came into the possession of the Lords of Lupfen. After the castle was destroyed in the Swiss War in 1499, after reconstruction and the extinction of those of Lupfen in 1610, it went to the Constance Monastery. In 1617 the castle was expanded into a secondary residence and the residential buildings were increased.
