Since the 24.October 2017 the play is opened over the viaduct from Mülheim main station to the Ruhrpromenade. At the moment the railway bridge over the Ruhr is rehabilitated, then it goes first to the university Ruhr West campus Mülheim (15 May 2019) and "sometime" also sometimes to Duisburg.
In the other direction Essen, the RS1 currently ends in the middle of the campus near the Gladbecker Straße (
At the moment, it looks like this end in Essen is going to stay that way: id212576983.html

100 km long gives the impression that the route is already finished. However, this is not the case. It is only a short section between Essen and Mülheim as developed as in the pictures. We are waiting for the realization

The already completed track shows that the money invested has paid off. I recommend everyone, with or without a bike, to watch the track. For me, this is part of the upcoming infrastructure in local traffic. In NRW this kind of infrastructure has to be pushed much more. From people to us humans, almost CO2 neutral.

So, it should be mentioned, that the next piece will be released at the earliest in February 2017. Otherwise, I can only recommend this route to every cyclist, it is always a pleasure to drive there.

In particular, because the project is still partially in the implementation, it might be interesting to inquire about the current state of affairs from time to time, see:

Good evening Julia, if you still need something for your work, here's a little stop of an "active" cyclist; Personally, I find the RS1 to be perfect and I'm definitely on the bike from Oberhausen faster in the Gruga in Essen, than with the car, however, the signs in MH to the "Einfährt" of RS1 to "find" (in the truest sense of the Word) absolutely miserable and confusing. Otherwise, the "departures" are well signposted

Question: how long is the finished piece (from where to where?) And which
Section (length) is added ?? Close that to the existing part
directly to?? Info is helpful for tour next year
Would be nice if somebody of local times could tell - Thanks

    Hello Mr. Sellars,
The RS1 Radschnellweg is finished from Uni Essen to Mülheim Hauptbahnhof. Distance about 10-13 km.
In between (altitude Essen Schönebeck / border Mülheim there is a connection to the Grugaradweg because you can drive down to the Ruhr and there comes on the Ruhr Valley Cycle Route.

A good stretch between Mühlheim and Essen, we would like to cycle the 101km at a stretch.

This bike path is like a highway. For those who want to move quickly between Hamm and Duisburg, this track with the finest asphalt is perfect. Six meters wide, 100km long. Radlerherz what do you want more?

"Regierungsbeziirk Münster" in the location is of course nonsense. The finished part exclusively in the RB Dusseldorf. Also, the future RS1 will be located almost exclusively in the RB Dusseldorf and Arnsberg. It is also not a point, but a section currently about 15 km long.

The RS1 is a great and very fast to cycle road between Mülheim / Ruhr and Essen or vice versa.

It's really amazing what you can do with old railway lines.
The RS1 is a prime example, but only from Duisburg to Essen.
