Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte ordered in 1811 the construction of Fort Morand in the strategically important city of Den Helder. During the construction period between 1811 and 1813, hundreds of Spanish prisoners of war were used in addition to craftsmen from the province of North Holland. The construction costs of the fort are estimated at a total of about 230,000 French francs (Wikipedia).
