      The church is a modern church building in Wuppertal-Sonnborn, which was completed in 1976. The eventful history of the community goes back to the Middle Ages. An early medieval "basilica" existed in Sonnborn until the middle of the 15th century. It stood on the protruding height at the entrance to the place where the Reformed Church rises today. During the Reformation, a large part of the community accepted the new doctrine, and the few remaining Catholics had to go to the Gräfrath Monastery to worship. With the construction of the Bergisch-Märkische Bahn with the Vohwinkel train station and the Hammerstein spinning mill, a large number of foreign workers and their families moved to Sonnborn, some of whom were Catholic. The number of Catholics in Sonnborn increased to such an extent that the pastor of Solingen Gräfrath, who was responsible for them, considered it necessary to set up their own parish again in Sonnborn. In 1854 the building of today's solar pharmacy (formerly “Kaiserlicher Hof”) was bought, and a chapel, a “catechist room” and an apartment for the clergy could be set up there the construction of the new St. Remigius Church. At that time, the municipality included not only Sonnborn but also the whole of Vohwinkel.

        St. Remigius is the Roman Catholic parish church for the Wuppertal district of Sonnborn and the place of worship for the parish of St. Remigius, which is the continuation of what is probably the oldest Christian community in Wuppertal until the Reformation.
