The exhibits in the buildings use text, graphics and models to show interesting facts about the formation, occurrence, search, extraction, processing and use of crude oil. Furthermore, the history of crude oil production and use, especially in the region around Wietze, is presented vividly. On an approximately two-acre outdoor area old and modern technical facilities for oil production, oil exploration and oil processing can be seen. Occasionally there are mining exchanges where mining, minerals and fossil related items can be traded, sold and purchased.

The German Petroleum Museum was established in 1970 on a section of the former oil field (Cameroon operation). The almost two-hectare outdoor area with its production facilities was preserved as it was in operation until 1963. In the course of time, further technical systems were added, which today represent a unique open-air exhibition.
