The lighthouse was built between 1300 and 1310. It served as protection against pirates who threatened merchant ships in the mouth of the Elbe and armed attacks by beachcombers, as well as against flooding during storm surges. After a fire in 1360, it was rebuilt in the original style between 1376 and 1379.
