After his return from the crusade in the holy land Egenolph II von Rappoltstein settled here as a hermit. From one of his travels he had brought a statue of Mary, for which he had built a chapel in gratitude for his happy return home.
Over time, the buildings were expanded, plundered, destroyed, renovated and remodeled. And have always changed hands.
The place is still today a much visited pilgrimage site.
