Tips

  • Andibonn

Great viewpoint and not easy to reach, because the scrambling over the ridge with its partly vertical slate rocks is a sweaty but worthwhile affair.

Not entirely without the way there, but a view that is worth seeing. Not for the faint of heart, be careful alpine!

From the summit cross with summit book you have a great view of Altenahr and Are Castle.

The alpine ascent to Engelsley is strenuous but is rewarded with a great view of the Ahr valley. Highly recommended but you should only be sure-footed and have a head for heights.

From here you have a beautiful view of the Saffenburg ruins. The ruin is just a little off the Ahrsteig. For the ruin see saffenburg.de

There are 3 good ways to get to the cross. Entry on the south side - at sunrise
Entrance on the north side - hidden from Ahr Castle
Entry on the east side - somewhat hidden behind the underpass

The hike over the Engelsley has an alpine character and is very strenuous but also beautiful. The summit cross even has a booklet to enter. I would only do this hike with suitable footwear (no sneakers). A head for heights, surefootedness are important in my opinion. The Engelsley is not secured at any point.

“Each of these crosses can tell its own story and what motivated people to erect“ their ”cross at this point. (...) These crossroads were erected as visible signs and attract the eyes of many people. The cross is a symbol of life. It stands as a sign of our Christian hope and wants to direct our gaze to Jesus Christ, who overcame death (...). The cross is part of our life, just as it was part of the life of Jesus. So I hope that many people ... visit the crossroads, whether as places of silence and breathing before God, whether as places of congregation meeting, prayer and praise of God. "
(Dean Rainald M. Ollig in "Wegekreuze")

There are several approaches and routes to Engelsley. The biggest differences are whether you like to handle climbing ropes and the like. In fact, however, you can bypass great climbing on any route. Tip for great colors in every season - sunrise 🌄 hike towards the castle. Sunset away from the castle. (Not for kids under 8)
