Very nice view of Mayschoß and the Saffenburg.
Above Mayschoß lies the Saffenburg, which was first mentioned in documents in 1081. This makes it the oldest castle complex in the Ahr valley. The building blocks were hewn out of the rock on site. This created smooth, vertical rock walls on whose wheels the castle buildings rose.
In the course of history, the Saffenburg was occupied twice: in 1632 by Swedish troops and in 1701 by French troops. The French only got into the castle by trickery. At the time of the grape harvest, when the three drawbridges were lowered so that the winegrowers could deliver the grapes, French officers disguised as merchants mingled with the winegrowers. This allowed them to enter the castle unmolested and disarm the gatekeepers.
The foundations of the castle have been preserved to this day. A support association looks after the complex and the castle grounds are accessible. A hut below the castle plateau is open from spring to autumn. The castle offers a magnificent 360° panoramic view of Mayschoß, the Ahr river and the surrounding towns.
    Absolutely worth seeing!

Very nice view of the Ahr loop, comparable to the large Rhine loop near Boppard.👍
