The town hall was built around 1230 in the style of medieval and early modern secular architecture. Over the centuries, it has been constantly expanded and is still the headquarters of the council and administration of the Hanseatic city of Lüneburg. At the moment it is being refurbished taking into account archaeological and architectural research. By 2024/25, the renovation should be completed.
