"It's pretty inconspicuous today, the old harbor basin, where waterfowl cavort. An old bridge made of rubble stones spans the narrow entrance. Cyclists have trouble riding the small piece of bumpy pavement of the old towpath - an idyll! Hardly anyone suspects that that one of the most important port facilities for the Ruhr shipping was located at this point. The initiative to build a so-called safety port came from merchants and industrialists. As early as 1833, they demanded a facility that offered protection to coal ships in storms, changing water levels, frost and for winter storage .

Let's take a look at the old construction files: The phenomenon that the estimated construction costs and the timeframe often have to be pushed up significantly, especially for public construction projects, is - as can be seen from the construction of the Holteyer Hafen - not a new problem. Difficulties arose right from the start of construction: the new steam dredger could not yet be made available in 1837, and the Liège brickworkers that were urgently needed had already been hired by other builders. Construction came to a standstill and it only continued at the beginning of 1838. But even heavenly powers were not always kind to the port: bad weather made things difficult for the excavator brought from Ruhrort, so that by the middle of the year only half of the planned excavation work had been completed. Finally, in August, flooding hampered the progress of construction. In addition, there was again a shortage of workers, which could only be remedied by recruiting workers from the Paderborn area (!).

When the port could finally be put into operation, a port supervisor was hired to monitor the facility, who stayed in an adjacent building. With the construction of the railways in the Ruhr valley, however, transport on the Ruhr proved to be unprofitable over time. The port facilities fell into disrepair and are hardly recognizable today. " Source: route-industriekultur.ruhr/themenrouten/11-fruehe-industrialisations/holteyer-hafen.html

The high-voltage pylon, clad in colorful Plexiglas, is part of the Ruhr Art Path on the Ruhr Valley Cycle Path. Officially this construction is called "Lighthouse" and was conceived by a group of students. Shortly behind is the entrance to the former Holteyer Hafen.

That looks great. When the sun shines through the colored glass, a mysterious world emerges
