A fantastic Spreeabschnitt! Whether on a walk, a bike ride or just relaxing on a bench - the view of the River Spree and the surrounding government district is beautiful.
In front of the Reichstag building extends the Republic Square. At its western end, the House of World Cultures joins the Congress Hall.
With the construction of the Berlin Wall on 13 August 1961, ran the immediate border between East and West Berlin on the eastern edge of the Spreebogens, crossed the Spree there in the form of a facility to control cross-border shipping. However, the vessel traffic controlled there did not consist of excursion boats, but mainly of Polish cargo ships and push associations with Polish coal for the power plants of West Berlin. The ships were also searched under water from outside for refugees. Where the wall behind the Reichstag flowed into this border crossing, on the western side, on the banks of the Spree, there was a commemorative plaque commemorating those who had been attempted to flee to the west. After the political change, this board was moved and is now located between the Reichstag and the Brandenburg Gate. The Tempodrom next to the congress hall, a circus tent in which rock concerts were held, was created under the leadership of, among others, Nina Hagen as a cultural consequence of the squatter scene and in Berlin's cultural landscape for decades an institution. It had to give way to the Federal Chancellery and has now been built on the grounds of the former Anhalter station in Kreuzberg in solid form.
