In the 1950s, the Dubois Arena was a boxing venue in the Essen district of Borbeck. Today it is used for open-air concerts, community children's festivals, theater performances and similar events. The arena bears the name of the founder and first president of the Association of German Professional Boxers, Ernst Dubois (*23 January 1900, †16 February 1957). The Dubois Arena was built as a boxing arena after the Second World War, around the time of the currency reform in 1948, by members of the Essen Dubois Boxing Club (EBD), which had been founded by Ernst Dubois in 1920. Up to 25,000 people attended boxing matches in Essen-Borbeck in the 1950s. In 1953, for example, the major international match between Spain and Germany took place, and Max Schmeling was also a guest several times. The newsreel formats Blick in die Welt and Fox's sounding newsreel reported live from the Dubois Arena at that time.
After years of intensive use as a sports arena and after the death of Ernst Dubois, the building fell into disrepair in the 1960s and 1970s. Thanks to the commitment of the Schönebeck Youth Wind Orchestra, the arena was rebuilt and renovated in the 1980s. Of the original circular stands, only a semicircle of stands with a stage opposite still exists today.
