Only a few people receive a real monument during their lifetime.
The surgeon Johann Friedrich August von Esmarch (* January 9, 1823 in Tönning; † February 23, 1908 in Kiel) is one of them, because in 1905 - shortly after his 80th birthday - his hometown of Tönning honored him with a statue in a prominent place in the castle garden.
In the decades of his professional activity, Friedrich von Esmarch contributed a lot to the development of medicine: He is considered the founder of the civilian medical service,
introduced bandage packs, triangular bandages and leg splints, among other things, and invented the ice pack for cooling. He developed into one of the most important trauma surgeons of the
19th century. Adolf Brütt, one of the most famous German sculptors at the time, was commissioned to create the statue.

The building on the castle grounds was originally the seat of the Eiderstedt district administration. Now it is mainly used by the State Office for the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. Four sandstone sculptures from 1682-1687, known as "Beischlagwangen", are the last remaining decorative elements of the former ducal castle. With their depictions of the ancient gods Venus and Mercury, the statues embody particularly classic examples of the now rare Low German early Baroque. After previously being installed unprotected here in the castle garden, "Der Runde Tisch e.V." had them restored in 2003 and protected with a roof.
This and the enclosing by a wall base made of historical "monastery stones"
were supported by many donors, whose names are walled into the foundation.

Via the Eiderdeich to the Herrengraben you reach the castle park, the last remnant of the former Tönning Castle, which was demolished by the Danes in 1735. At the time, Tönning Castle was the most elaborate castle building on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein.
