Next to the main entrance of St. Stephen's Church stands a 400-year-old bell, which was damaged in a crash during World War II. The nearly four-ton cast iron bell, bearing the coats of arms of Lindau and the Free Imperial Cities, is now a popular photo subject.

Evangelical parish church of St. Stephen

Rococo church of fine stucco and stained glass

The church was built in 1180 - its tower base and the southern choir wall date from this time. Around 1500 the building was extended to its present form and its bright, friendly interior design is due to the Rococo style: in 1781 the altar, the baptismal font and the pulpit in reddish stucco marble were added. Finally, in 1965, the brightly colored choir windows with biblical motifs were created, which not only shine in bright colors on sunny days.

Valuable furnishings with altar, pulpit and wood carvings

If you are looking for something elaborately decorative despite so much simplicity, you will find it on the organ. Its more than 200-year-old case is richly decorated and impresses with countless details. When leaving the church, it is worth not only looking up at the wrought-iron balcony, but also looking to the side: next to the main entrance there is a 400-year-old bell that was damaged in a crash during World War II. The almost 4 tons of cast iron with the coats of arms of Lindau and the Free Imperial Cities are a popular photo motif today.

The pews in St. Stephen's are something very special: Because the pulpit is in the middle of the church, the pews were designed with foldable backrests. Visitors can decide for themselves whether they want to look at the altar or the pulpit.

The 400-year-old bell of St. Stephen, which previously stood on the church tower, has been given a new place next to the main entrance of the church since Thursday. Members of the THW and employees of the municipal building yard have re-erected the bell. It was cast in 1608 by Lindau bell founder Leonhard Ernst and fell during the war-related inspection in 1943. Since then it has had a crack that could no longer be repaired. The Protestant parish of St. Stephen therefore had a new large bell cast in 1993. The baroque bell, which weighs around 3.8 tons and has a diameter of 1.76 meters, also shows the coats of arms of Lindau and the Free Imperial Cities. According to Pastor Eberhard Heuß, the bell in its new location does justice to its importance as a document of Lindau's history.
