The highest source of the Spree is on the western slope of the Kottmar at a height of 478 meters. In 1921, a semi-circular phonolite stone wall was built around the source in a slope niche on the Kottmar, from which the Eibauer Spreequelle, also known as Buchenborn, emerges. It lists the hometowns of those who died in World War I and were members of the Lusatia Mountain Club. The complex surrounded by beech and spruce trees was renovated in 1957.

If you want to cycle along the Spree Cycle Path, you must of course not miss the Spree source. The climb is a little bit tricky, but worth it!

Most people know that Germany's capital is on the Spree. But where does the Spree actually have its source? Definitely not in the Spreewald, as many ignorant people answer. In fact, the cradle of the Spree is in the heart of Upper Lusatia. Did you know that the Spree, so beloved by Berliners, has a total of 3 sources. The highest of the 3 sources of the Spree rises from the "blue stones" at the Kottmar at a height of 478 meters. The source of the Spree with the most water is about 4km away on a hiking trail, in front of the public baths in Neugersdorf, and it is said that the most beautiful of the 3 sources is about 1km away, on the Spreeborn in Ebersbach.
