The Westwall, also known as the Siegfried Line by the Western Allies, was a military defensive system distributed along the western border of the German Reich over more than 630 km, consisting of over 18,000 bunkers, tunnels and countless trenches and moats Tank Barriers existed. It ran from Kleve on the Dutch border in the south to Grenzach-Wyhlen on the Swiss border.

Hitler had the plant, which had military and propagandistic value, plan from 1936 and build between 1938 and 1940. Shortly before that, in the occupation of the Rhineland on March 7, 1936, contrary to the conditions laid down in the Treaty of Versailles, he had the territories demilitarized by the Empire demarcated by the consequences of the First World War occupied by Wehrmacht troops on both sides of the Rhine.

The Kranzbruch is a nature reserve between Simmerath and Konzen.
Formerly a fens and bog forest area, it was drained and planted with spruces in the 19th century, so that the typical fens vegetation disappeared. A few years ago, the area was renaturalized by closing drainage ditches and removing spruce forests so that the original vegetation could prevail.

On a narrow bridge of concrete, you walk along relics of the old west wall.

Again, the memory of bad times and the struggle of nature against these concrete monsters. Again, please be careful, very boggy ground.

On one side of the Westwall hiking trail, the 80-year-old reinforced concrete cusp line, on the other, the beautiful nature of the NSG Kranzbruch. Opposites can hardly be greater!

The Westwall is both a piece of history and a memorial.
The trail on the Westwall is worthwhile, as it leads through beautiful nature and in bad weather even keep your feet dry ...

Walking on the wall requires a bit of attention. If you miss it or are careless, it can go half a meter down. So always be careful.
