Since the end of the 19th century, peat has been mined in open pits using the open pit method. After the storage layers have been drained, white peat is processed by milling and pressing to reduce the volume. Black peat used to be cut manually and air-dried in batches or squats. Today, peat is no longer cut by machine, but milled or excavated in a flow process and first dried by pressing and finally by open storage until it can be used.

With a little luck, you can watch the manual peat stitch (especially early in the morning in summer). The resulting peat sods are stacked and dry in the sun for a longer period of time before they are marketed for landscape gardening or for decorative purposes.
