The castle (“Altes Schloß”), built by Archbishop Konrad von Wittelsbach at the end of the 12th century, stands on Loessboden and was - just as unusual - facing south. It was mentioned twice in 1227 and 1230 as “Castrum Waldenberc” and “Waleberc”.
At first it was assumed that the castle was the seat of the Focke family from Kleinwallstadt. From 1183 onwards, the then new Aschaffenburg Vizedom Konrad came into question as lord of the castle.
The castle served the Mainz bishopric as a bulwark and base to help the Hohenstaufen opponents, who had great influence in the southwestern Spessart (which the Mainzers disliked), to ascend the borders. After the Archbishops of Mainz prevailed against the Counts of Rieneck in the late 13th century, the castle lost its strategic value and was abandoned.
On the oldest map of the Spessart, the Pfinzig map from 1594, the Waldenburg is no longer drawn in and shown as a castle stables overgrown by the forest.
The original dimensions of the castle can only be guessed at with a great deal of imagination and specialist knowledge from the remains of the wall that still exist today.

A somewhat arduous climb up the stairs leads to the remains of the walls of the former castle. Good information boards give information about the history and the probable appearance. A rest area is also available here.
