St. Jacobi is the third of Greifswald's three Gothic brick churches. It was built in the 13th century when a new town was being built. St. Jacobi's Church was particularly connected with the university: the students of the arts faculty had to attend the services and from 1889 to 1989 the academic services took place here.

The church is not far from the University of Greifswald, directly on the pilgrimage route. It's not far to the train station either. More information (including opening hours) can be found on the community website.

The smallest medieval parish church in Greifswald was first mentioned in a document in 1275. Around 1400 it was converted into a three-aisled hall and the choir was added. During the 30 Years War the church was used as a grain and flour store. The medieval interior was completely destroyed during the Napoleonic occupation of Greifswald from 1807 to 1813. Only the font from the 13th century was preserved. The architect and university teacher Johann Gottfried Quistorp began redesigning the church interior in 1817. After a fire in 1955, a new helmet was put on the tower in 1966. The beautiful painted choir windows and the huge church roof were renovated in 2002 after St. Jacobi had been chosen as the exhibition and event space for the much-noticed North German presentation "Ways of the Brick Gothic". Caspar David Friedrich made numerous pencil drawings and oil paintings such as "Klosterfriedhof im Schnee" (1818/19) or "Miesen vor Greifswald" (1820/22) with the Jacobi Church in focus.
The church is located on the European Route of Brick Gothic, Schwedenstrasse and Caspar-David-Friedrich-Bildweg.

The Roman Catholic parish church Saint Joseph in Greifswald is a neo-Gothic brick building and is located on the southern edge of the old town of Greifswald on the corner of Bahnhofstraße / Rubenowstraße.

St. Jacobi's Church is located on the edge of the western old town of Greifswald.
It is located near the main buildings of the university and the St. Spiritus complex and is one of the most important sights in the city.

St. Jacobi is the smallest and youngest of the three Gothic churches in the Hanseatic city of Greifswald. The church, built in 1280, was originally two-aisled, but was converted into a three-aisled church in the 14th century.

Like St. Nikolai's Cathedral, St. Jacobi's Church is made entirely of brick.
It is dedicated to Jacobus, the patron saint of travelers and fishermen. A fire in 1955 destroyed the original tower with its half-timbered top and was rebuilt ten years later without this top.

Valuable items of inventory include a Gothic communion chalice and a baptismal font made of granite in the 13th century. Other special features are the colorful choir windows, the pulpit and the altarpieces, which show, among other things, Jesus on the cross.
Due to a redesign of the interior in the 1980s, St. Jacobi Church has a modern appearance.

Unfortunately, St. Jacobi is only open regularly during the week, on weekends you have to be lucky that someone is there and unlocks the doors.
This church is probably the most unlucky person you can imagine at a church. A conflict between students and the Stasi caused the tower to burn down completely. Today the plaster is crumbling again. Unfortunately, after the statute of limitations, it was found that the roof tiles were laid completely incorrectly, so that it is now raining. Unfortunately, there is not yet enough money for the renovation, so it is to be hoped that an investor will soon be found who will save this simple and sublime church building.

St. Nicholas Cathedral is almost 750 years old and was built in the neo-Gothic style. It is the baptismal church of the painter Caspar David Friedrich - an impressive building.
