Hiking

An old trade in the Fichtelgebirge was the soot distillery. Wood rich in resin was burned in special kilns with a low air supply, resulting in soot of various grades being obtained.
This was used for shoe polish, car grease and for dyeing.
The soot was packed in small butten and sold as far away as Saxony and Egerland. The "Roußbuttnboum" took care of the transport, mostly poor boys, often children. A memorial was erected to one of them at the Egerbrücke as a "carrier of soot".
