The Franconian Saale is fed by two springs, one in Alsleben, the other in Obereßfeld in Lower Franconia, in the Rhön-Grabfeld district. The Franconian Saale was first mentioned in 716. The name of the river is derived from Indo-European Sal, which means salt, or Salā, for flowing water. The river gave the town of Saal an der Saale its name. It is popularly known as the "Rhoen gutter".
The source of the Saxon Saale is at the foot of the Großer Waldstein on the northwestern edge of the Fichtelgebirge, in the municipality of Zell im Fichtelgebirge in Upper Franconia: komoot.de/highlight/70932
