Between Passo della Calla and Prato alla Penna, in the heart of the Casentinesi Forest National Park, the main Apennine watershed is characterized by the presence of a rather uniform, almost straight ridge; it culminates with various peaks between 1300 and 1500 meters of altitude. The ridge as a whole is called "la Giogana", and under the name of "Gran Giogo" it is also mentioned by Dante in the Divine Comedy (Purgatorio, Canto V). The Poggio Scali (1520 m) rises more or less in a central position within the crest of the Giogana, and represents its highest peak.
    ....
The toponym "scali" derives from the presence of an ancient pedestrian street, in use since the Middle Ages, which connected the Romagna side to the Tuscan side by crossing the ridge near the summit. Due to the steepness of the route on the Romagna side, the mule track was called "via di scali". Today this mule track is no longer passable, as it crosses the heart of the Sassofratino integral reserve.

In the Parco delle Foreste Casentinesi, peak on the ridge offers a wide panorama to the north-east over Romagna and to the south-west over the Casentino. It can be reached on foot or by MTB from the Passo della Calla or from Prato alla Penna through the path "00" always well marked.
