Haastrecht originated at the beginning of the twelfth century on the spot where the Vlist flows into the Hollandse IJssel. At that time Haastrecht was still called Havekesdrecht. The settlement probably arose around the year 1108. At a later stage a castle was built, which has long since disappeared. Haastrecht received city rights in 1396.
