Hiking Highlight
A wonderfully beautiful lake with the beautiful backdrop of forests and partly snow-capped mountains of the Schnalstal. The lake is definitely worth a visit - but keep in mind that the parking lot at the dam (especially on weekends) can be quite crowded. It is therefore worthwhile to leave early.

There are 2 benches in this square and you have a fantastic view of Vernagt and the lake

Also in August still freezing cold. But definitely worth a refreshment!

Fantastic reservoir with a turquoise blue color. For us the end of the E5

Super> round trips around the reservoir are too high. Insider tip is but to go from the lake to the Özi monument. Stopover at Similaun Hütte, or go through. Walking time from the lake to the Özi, about 5-6 hours.

Very nicely located and many tours around the lake. In Vernagt itself there is actually only a small cafe / shop to take a break.

Super alpine backdrop. There are different tours from the lake, or around. Everything super marked. My insider tip is via the Similaun hut to the Ötzifund site. Walking time about 6-8 hours. You can spend the night at the hut.

Beautiful, especially in the sunrise or sunset
Circumnavigation takes about 2-3 hours depending on how much time you take

We've been up here four times and it's always nice. The only thing that was not so nice is that the lake was pretty empty, we had not seen it so empty, so despite the sun is not so good the turquoise color of the lake over.

Always nice to walk up there around the lake. Most beautiful, however, if not too little water is in it.

The lake can already be seen from the Similaun hut. The turquoise water shimmers in the distance.

The lake changes its color from light green to turquoise blue between August and September.

The turquoise Vernagt reservoir was created in the 1950s when a 65 meter high dam was built. This was completed in 1966. At that time, eight farms in the village of Vernagt were flooded and when the water level is low you can still see the bell tower of the old church sticking out of the lake. Beautiful lake with great water color. The circuit is recommended.

The path from the entrance to the high ropes course to the dam is very well signposted and easy to see even when it first snows. Waterproof footwear is recommended in the weather and freezing point in connection with snow 🤪😆.
A small section of the trail leads through a pasture with Scottish Highland cows, which look very impressive with their almost 50cm long horns on each side of the head. They were peaceful with us today, we ignored them and they did not pay attention to us. But it's not wrong to have respect.

Really great and colorful lake, great panorama. The circular route is easy to manage and, with 2 hours, is easy to manage with photos and a break.
