The name of the church comes from its former location outside the city wall. Created around 1340, the high, bright hall church has the most powerful Gothic church tower in Westphalia, which, however, has lacked a helmet since a hurricane (1704). The magnificent sculptures of the figure portal that destroyed the Anabaptists were excavated again in the cross hill and can be seen today in the Westphalian State Museum.

In addition to St. Paul's Cathedral, the Liebfrauen-Überwasser Church is the oldest church in the city of Münster. Excavations have shown that a small church probably stood at this location as early as the second half of the 9th century, as grave sites from this period can be found in the immediate vicinity of today's church.

The suburb of Überwasser, the "suburbium", was created in front of the Aafurt, where the Frisian Road coming from the north entered the actual Mimigernaford - the oldest name of Münster. Even after its final incorporation into the city as a whole around 1173/74, Überwasser led a certain municipal life of its own with self-administration, market law and jury jurisdiction, including a "post of shame", a pillory. This was also consistent with the episcopal decision to provide the residents there with their own parish church, Liebfrauen-Überwasser.
