For a long time, the Alte Alster was considered the source river of the Alster before it, due to the drainage into the Alster-Trave Canal, which only existed for a short time, and large-scale drainage due to increasing agriculture, led to less and less water and then the inflows from Henstedt coming from the north and east as actual Source rivers of the Alster were viewed.
