One of the royal residences, St James' Palace was built during the 1500s by Henry VIII and remains an important private residence and working building. Its north gatehouse is one of the most impressive parts of the public that can be seen by the public.

The Royal Court is still based in St James' Palace and several members of the Royal family still have their London residences there. It also marks the end of the long-distance footpath, the Orange Way. The way follows the footsteps of William of Orange, as he travelled from Devon to the palace to depose King James II.
