The Mistelbrunner Markuskapelle with its frescoes from the 13th century is one of the art historical gems in southern Baden and is one of the early examples of Christian architecture. The Mistelbrunn district of Bräunlingen with its almost 80 inhabitants was founded by the Reichenau Monastery and was first mentioned in 1145. The chapel in the town, like the mother Abbey of Reichenau, is dedicated to the Evangelist Markus. He was worshiped as a weather saint for many centuries; in so-called Marx processions, Bräunlingen citizens and farmers there often asked for more rain or more sun in earlier centuries. The church, which had been redesigned several times and which above all invited pilgrims to take a spiritual retreat, was built between 1120 and 1150 on the ruins of two previous buildings. At that time, the Reichenau Abbey had already sold its possessions there to the Allerheiligen Abbey near Schaffhausen. The church was frescoed between 1235 and 1250. The paintings on the north and south walls have been preserved. The creation of God according to the Old Testament is shown on the north wall, the New Testament salvation by Jesus Christ on the south wall.
