The path still exists, but is no longer maintained and used very little. That's why he's overgrown and quite adventurous, as written in another comment. We would be almost reversed twice. Long pants, good shoes and tread resistance are recommended.

A beautiful trail with stunning views to the sea and the lake. The path is quite narrow on long stretches and partly muddy (we had rained the day before). You definitely need good hiking boots.
We ran the trail in mid-May, which is probably the breeding season of the seagulls, because we were attacked several times. Especially on the last stretch to the lake you have to walk a long way through low, thorny scrub where the seagulls nest. There they are then very aggressive. On the beach you can take a nice break before you go to the steep climb.

The route left today (end of January 2019) and yes, it is demanding, but doable. It's just not a stretch for people who usually just keep on the roadside and taking pictures.
A must is waterproof hiking boots, as you walk through mud a lot and have to cross a stream twice. A long pants that can get wet is also recommended, as you walk along with the legs of the plants, if necessary, thorns!
But otherwise a wonderful hike where you can rest and really enjoy the original forest.

Went the way today with my family. Although not a good idea with children, the path still exists contrary to the previous comments. Very adventurous ... over a ridge, narrow paths, through scrub, over broken parts of the way down to a beautiful calm lake.
Absolutely not for the faint of heart, without hiking boots and inexperienced footing.

For me, the trail was one of the highlights on São Miguel and one of the best hikes I've done so far.Quite adventurous, overgrown, narrow, winding roads, muddy, slippery, sometimes very windy. Absolute must: sure-footed shoes, no sneakers or similar. and nothing for people who have problems with heights ...

In recent years, many ways of the well-known road network have been abandoned. That's one of them

This path shouldn't be here, it's illegal since its in a protect area, with native flora, inside the natural reserve. If you're caught by the local park rangers you're fined.

Did the route in September 2021. Contrary to the comment that it is forbidden to hike on the trail, we saw no signs or the like. So we just walked the trail.
The trail still exists, but as described by the others, it is very overgrown and muddy. This takes significantly longer than indicated by Komoot.
So sturdy shoes and surefootedness are a must. If you are looking for a real adventure, you are definitely right on the trail.
