Best Hikes to Wetzstein Viewpoint (798 m)

Tips

  • Very nice vantage point at 798 m above sea level. NN with pavilion.
From here, if you don't do it like I did and climb the strenuous slope in fog, you have a great view of the Ochsenkopf.

  • The formation of the Wetzsteinfelsens begins 495 - 486 million years ago. At that time, layer by layer and hundreds of meters thick clay and sands were deposited off the northern coast of the Urkontinents Gondwana. At the collision of the continents Gondwana and Laurussia tremendous forces from the clays, the phyllites, from sands quartzites. Millions of years later, they exposed it. The rocks of the Wetzsteinfelsens are very hard and consist almost exclusively of microscopically small quartz grains. They were ideal for making whetstones. These were used for grinding and sharpening tools, especially knives, scythes and sickles. Whetstones must have been mined here very early. Local historian Michael Götz brings in 1926 in the Archives of History of Upper Franconia a copy of the land register of Berneck, Gefrees and Goldkronach from 1536. In the description of forests and woods, the name "Wezstein" appears. This means that stone material for the production of whetstones has already been taken at this time. From 798 meters high Wetzsteinfelsen you have a good view of the Ochsenkopf, the second highest mountain in the Fichtelgebirge. The Ortsverein Bischofsgrün of the Fichtelgebirgsverein erected a viewing pavilion in 1968 and 2013, information boards provide information about geology, fauna, flora and the former Margrave's path.
