The Fridericianum is a central place for contemporary art. In 1779, the Museum Fridericianum opened, the world's first building designed as a public museum. The documenta art exhibition is held every five years in the Fridericianum, which has been completely renovated since 1982. In the Kingdom of Westphalia, the Fridericianum was the palace of the estates with the parliament hall from 1810 to 1813.
