Top cycling routes to Hörn Quay (Kiel)

Tips

  • Right at the end of the Hörn, wooden benches invite you to linger. Great, unobstructed view of the inner fjord.

  • The Hörn is busiest when, for example, folk festivals take place during the Kiel Week or events such as the Duckstein Festival or the Kiel dragon boat race. If you are given the opportunity to come to the Hörn Campus, then you should take it. There is a great view of the Kiel inner fjord from the upper floors.

  • The harbor tip of the state capital Kiel (Schleswig-Holstein), which forms the southern end of the Kiel Fjord, is called Hörn or “Die Hörn”.
The Hörn has been spanned by the three-part Hörn Bridge (three-span bascule bridge) for pedestrians and cyclists since 1997. Near the main train station, it connects the city center on the west bank with the district of Gaarden-Ost and the Norway Quay on the east bank. The high-rise center at Germaniahafen was completed there in 2007. Various traditional work ships are housed in the adjacent Germaniahafen. On the west bank, the station bridge is a landing stage for the regular ferries of the Kiel tug and ferry company in regional traffic, including to Laboe. From the Hörnbrücke you have a beautiful view of the southern Hörn campus over the Gablenz Bridge to the southwest, the main train station and the Kiel skyline in the northwest with the Nicolaikirche and the Kiel harbor with its gantry cranes.
Open-air events regularly take place on the Hörn, especially during Kiel Week. During herring season you can also see anglers standing here, as the Hörn is an important spawning area for herring.
On the southeast side of the Hörn, after the Hörn was renovated, an appropriate subsoil was created again with the help of granite blocks, which is marked as a restricted area for watercraft by yellow-black marking barrels.

Originally the Hörn extended about 200 m inland. Between 1886 and 1890, the overburden that resulted from the expansion of the dock facilities at the nearby shipyards was heaped up. This gave the Hörn its current rectangular shape. Historically, the Germania shipyard, which primarily manufactured submarines, was located on the Hörn. The city of Kiel has been working on a redevelopment concept for this former industrial area since 1989. To the north of the Hörn, the HDW shipyard with its characteristic gantry cranes is still located on the east bank. After the Norway terminal in 1997, the high-rise center at Germaniahafen and the Hörn Campus building on the front side of the Hörn were the first buildings to be built as part of the Kai-City project Kiel were completed.
