The Schwentine rises from several sources on the Bungsberg and connects the Holstein lakes to form a chain of lakes before it flows into the Kiel Fjord. The East Holstein Lake District, created in the late period of the last glaciation, is also called “Holstein Switzerland”. The largest lake in the course of the Schwentine is the Great Plöner See. This lake covers an area of about 30 square kilometers and measures about 60 m at its deepest point.The bottom of the lake is very irregular and has numerous shallows and islands, which are called Warder.
