Anyone using the B4 from Erfurt towards Nordhausen as a motorized vehicle will come through the small town of Greußen just before Sondershausen. Local people first think of the "Greussen salami". But the city has another ace up its sleeve besides refined pork. Excavations have been carried out on the "Funkenburg", an altitude to the west of the main town, since the 1970s. The aim was to explore a Germanic fortified settlement from the 2nd century BC to the 1st century AD. Parts of it were reconstructed true to the original and today shows the defense tower, gate building, long house, storage and residential buildings, surrounded by a palisade complex. An interesting look into the time of the early ancestors. Today managed by a club of modern Greussians with coffee and cake. A detour is worth it!
