From the hut you can observe the bird protection and breeding area of the little grebe, marsh harrier, bittern, lapwing or crane through hatches. An informative board explains the post-mining landscape of the Bockwitz nature reserve.

Between the Bockwitzer See east of Borna and the Harthsee near Neukirchen there is a small body of water that looks almost like a nose on maps: 33 hectares in size, maximum water depth 5.90 meters and only flooded by the groundwater rise, breeding area for great reed warblers, marsh harriers and little grebes as well as a resting place for Nordic geese in winter.
