Best Hikes to Ulmer Schachtel at the Danube Swabian Central Museum

Tips

  • The correct name for the keelless riverboat is "Zille" or "Plätte." Such vessels have been sailing to Vienna on a scheduled basis since 1712.
In the 1840s, a member of the Stuttgart state parliament mocked the ship as the "Ulm box." This term has since become common.
This and much more is explained on a panel next to the ship.
The central museum of the Danube Swabians is located in the fortress building behind it: dzm-museum.de

  • A genuine, restored Ulm box! They were actually called Viennese Zillen. 😁
