"For eight centuries, the Godesburg, more precisely its 39 meter high keep, has towered over the Rhine Valley, albeit only for three centuries in all its beauty. Construction began in 1210, and in 1583 the Godesburg was destroyed in the Truchsessian War.
The construction of the Godesburg began in 1210, the Archbishop of Cologne, Dietrich I von Hengebach, laid the foundation stone. The spacious fortress soon became one of the favorite seats of the Electors of Cologne. The Godesburg was destroyed in 1583 during the Truchsessian War. Archbishop Gebhard Truchsess of Waldenburg had converted to the Protestant faith and was deposed by the Pope. The successor, Ernst von Bayern, tried to gain access to his new territory with the help of troops. 1500 pounds of powder left only remnants and the keep of the castle. In 1891 Kaiser Wilhelm II gave the ruins to the municipality of Godesberg, which in 1896 set up a restaurant in the historicizing style. In 1960, a hotel and the restaurant, which still exists today, were built according to plans by Gottfried Böhm. In 2006 the city of Bonn renovated the keep and a small permanent exhibition provides information about the history of the castle.
In April 2010, the Bad Godesberger Heimatverein handed over a bronze model of the Godesburg, which was made by the sculptor Friedemann Sander.
From mid-September 2012, the keep was renovated again. During the refurbishment, old cement joints on the tower were removed and then repointed. Repair mortar was partially used on natural stones and joints from the construction period. Masonry anchors were installed to fix loose wall shells, and the facade was finally cleaned. 1.2 million euros were estimated for the renovation of the keep of the Godesburg. The federal and state governments subsidized the project with 700,000 euros."

Great distant view, but the Godesburg can also be seen from a distance ...
