To the north, about five kilometers from the village of Locorotondo, near the forest of Fasano, there is the district of San Marco. One of the hundred highly populated districts of Locorotondo with a well-developed and organized community life. At the center of the district is the small church of San Marco.

Once this area corresponded to the Casale di Santa Maria di Cignano with a small church dedicated to Santa Maria Maddalena. Around 1678 the bishop of Monopoli had a new sacred building dedicated to San Marco rebuilt on the site occupied by the church. The church has a tao plant. The two transepts are from different periods, due to the enlargements that the church has undergone over the centuries. The left transept is the oldest one which unlike the other is marked by stone arches and deep niches on the right. At the bottom of the wall there is a wall altar and in the floor you can see the trap door openings that suggest the existence of an ancient burial ground. According to some historians, this transept originally represented the only existing religious structure which was then enlarged with the other two branches, also changing the orientation of the building itself. The structure is externally covered by cummerse roofs made to call carelle.

Beautiful old church, definitely worth a photo stop.
