The evangelical parish church of St. John the Baptist was built in the Romanesque-Gothic style from the 13th to the 15th century. Inside you can see the late Gothic Pietà, a figure of Mary with the dead Jesus, and the organ from the 18th century.
In the side entrance, on the left, is the tombstone made of red sandstone for Margarethe von der Saale (d. 1566), the "other married wife" of Landgrave Philip the Magnanimous. On the right is the high grave of Landgravine Anna (died 1462), the widow of Ludwig I the Peaceful.

The Protestant parish church of Spangenberg was built in the Romanesque-Gothic style between the 13th and 15th centuries. The oldest parts of the church are the nave and the three lower floors of the church tower. In the side entrance, on the left, is the grave slab made of red sandstone for Margarethe von der Saale (1522–1566), the “other married wife” of Landgrave Philip the Magnanimous, who had been married to Christine of Saxony since 1523.
