The parish church of St. Johannes Baptist is also called Sauerland Cathedral. A first predecessor was built in the 9th century, this was expanded in the 11th century by the second building, around 1230 as a third building in the style of a three-cone system. In the second half of the 14th century, today's Gothic hall church was built. The tower dates from around 1230, was increased in the 14th century and has been crowned by a baroque onion since the baroque period. It is considered the symbol of the city. The church has been the center of worship for more than 1000 years. Source: Pastoral Association Attendorn

Saint John the Baptist (also John Baptist), to whom this church is dedicated, is - like Saint Joseph - a man on the threshold of the Old and New Testaments. His parents are Zacharias and Elizabeth. After the announcement of the incarnation of God through them, the Mother of God visits her relative Elizabeth, who will give birth to a son in old age, namely John the Baptist. He is half a year older than Jesus and is considered his forerunner/pioneer. He lives in the desert, preaches repentance from sin to the Jewish population and baptizes them in the Jordan. Jesus also comes there to be baptized, and is filled with the Holy Spirit who descends upon him from heaven.

The memorial day of John the Baptist (Baptist) in the calendar of saints is June 24th, exactly half a year before 'Christmas Eve'.
