The fortress Hohensalzburg towers high on the Mönchsberg above the roofs of the baroque old town. As the largest completely preserved castle in Central Europe, the landmark of Salzburg attracts millions of tourists every year to the city of Mozart. Archbishop Gebhard built the fortress in 1077 and decisively shaped the Salzburg city panorama. In the following years his successors were responsible for the further development of the fortress architecture. Around 1500, the fortress under Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach received its current appearance. The original purpose of the fortress was to protect the principality and the archbishops from enemy attacks. In all these years it was never taken by foreign troops.

The fortress is open all year round. Since 1892, it is easily accessible not only on foot, but also with the fortress railway from the Festungsgasse. A special highlight of the fortress is the medieval Fürstenzimmern and the fortress museum with historical exhibits from the prince archbishop's court life. The Marionette Museum as well as the Rainer Regimental Museum also invite to a journey into the past. In addition, the more than 900-year-old fortress is the venue for the well-known Salzburg Fortress Concerts.
