The Hexenturm Coburg, also known as Kiliansturm, is a significant historical site nestled in the heart of Coburg, Upper Franconia, Germany. Standing at an elevation of 342 meters, this imposing three-story round tower was originally constructed around 1200 as a vital part of the city's medieval fortifications. The low, thick round tower rose dark and gray from the south-western city wall.
A small door studded with iron bands led to the first floor of the tower.
Here in the underground dungeon lay the young, beautiful woman, the wife of a Coburg citizen, who was accused of being a witch.
An evil person who was generally only called the "witch's nose" had hounded until the relatives who were hostile to the young woman accused her of sorcery because her husband was seriously ill.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the historical significance of Hexenturm Coburg beyond its use as a 'witch prison'?

While famously known as a 'witch prison' from the mid-16th century, the Hexenturm Coburg, originally named Kiliansturm, was first built around 1200 as a crucial part of Coburg's medieval city fortifications. It served as a defensive tower for centuries before its darker period. Later, in 1781/1782, it was converted into a common prison known as a 'Fronfeste'. The tower's structure itself, with its thick sandstone walls and bricked-up portal, tells a story of medieval engineering and urban defense.

Can visitors go inside the Hexenturm Coburg, and are there any specific access details?

The Hexenturm Coburg is not regularly open to the public for independent entry. However, visitors interested in a closer look can often request a viewing. This typically involves contacting the local tourism office or the 'Stadtbild Coburg e. V.' association, which owns the building, to arrange access. It's best to inquire in advance to confirm availability and any potential guided tour options.

Are there any specific walking routes or trails that incorporate the Hexenturm Coburg?

While the Hexenturm itself is a static monument within the city, it is integrated into the historic urban fabric of Coburg. There are various urban walking paths that lead past the tower and connect it to other significant historical sites in the city center, such as the Veste Coburg fortress and Ehrenburg Palace. These routes offer a chance to explore Coburg's rich history on foot, providing context to the tower's location within the medieval city walls.

What are the parking options available for visitors to Hexenturm Coburg?

As the Hexenturm Coburg is located in the city center at Ernstplatz 12, direct parking at the tower is limited. Visitors typically use public parking garages or designated parking areas within walking distance of the historic center. It's advisable to look for parking facilities near Ernstplatz or other central locations in Coburg, which usually offer paid parking options.

Is Hexenturm Coburg suitable for families with children, and are there any family-friendly activities nearby?

The Hexenturm Coburg offers a profound historical experience, which can be educational for families, especially older children who can grasp its somber history. While there are no specific 'family activities' at the tower itself, its location in the historic city of Coburg means families can combine a visit with exploring other attractions. The Veste Coburg fortress, for instance, offers more interactive elements and expansive grounds that might appeal more directly to younger children, and it's easily accessible from the Hexenturm.

What is the dog policy for visiting Hexenturm Coburg and the surrounding areas?

As the Hexenturm Coburg is an outdoor historical monument in an urban setting, dogs are generally permitted in the public areas around the tower, provided they are kept on a leash. If you plan to visit other indoor attractions or request an internal viewing of the tower, it's best to check their specific dog policies beforehand. Coburg's city parks and walking paths are generally dog-friendly, making it possible to explore the area with your canine companion.

Are there any cafes, pubs, or accommodation options conveniently located near Hexenturm Coburg?

Yes, being situated in the heart of Coburg's historic center, the Hexenturm is surrounded by numerous amenities. You'll find a variety of cafes, restaurants, and traditional pubs within a short walking distance, offering options for meals, snacks, and refreshments. There are also several hotels and guesthouses in the immediate vicinity and throughout the city center, catering to different budgets and preferences for overnight stays.

What are the best viewpoints to appreciate the Hexenturm Coburg from the outside?

The Hexenturm Coburg is best appreciated from various points within the historic city center. Its location at Ernstplatz 12, integrated into the former city wall, allows for good views from the surrounding streets and squares. Walking along the remnants of the old city fortifications or exploring the pathways around the former Sunday School building will offer different perspectives of its imposing structure and its historical context within Coburg.

Is Hexenturm Coburg accessible for visitors with disabilities or those using wheelchairs?

The Hexenturm Coburg is an ancient structure, and its immediate surroundings may present some accessibility challenges due to cobblestones and uneven terrain typical of historic city centers. While the exterior can be viewed from public pathways, internal access to the tower, if arranged, might be limited due to its historical design (e.g., narrow doorways, stairs). Visitors with mobility concerns are advised to contact the local tourism office in advance to inquire about specific accessibility details and potential accommodations.

How long should one plan for a visit to Hexenturm Coburg?

A visit to the Hexenturm Coburg itself, focusing on its exterior and memorial plaque, typically takes about 15-30 minutes. If you are able to arrange an internal viewing, this might extend your visit. However, most visitors integrate the Hexenturm into a broader exploration of Coburg's historic city center, which could easily take a few hours or even a full day to include other sites like the Veste Coburg and Ehrenburg Palace.
