The area at the foot of the Dolmar is an aviation location with a long tradition.
The first gliding event took place in 1927.
Especially because of the favorable thermal conditions on the southern slope of Dolmar, the place developed into a popular glider location.
In September 1933 an air hall was inaugurated on the mountain.
The “Dolmar Airline Community” was founded.
In 1967 gliding was banned because of its proximity to the inner-German border, and the Soviet army used the Dolmar as a training area.

Even the approach to this place is delightful - as it lies there on the slope. And then the view of the Rhön and the Thuringian Forest! But it's not just nature that makes Dolmar a very special flying mountain.
In 1933 the "Dolmarfluggemeinschaft" was founded, three years later there was an aircraft hangar as well as a farm building and accommodation. Before the war, glider pilots were trained on the Dolmar, and the foundations of the former “Göring Hall” can still be seen today at the edge of the forest below the summit, where the slope becomes steeper. Until 1968 glider flights took place on the site, starting on the winch and in towing. Then the Russians came with their tanks and used the mountain as a military training area until 1991.
