The area had grown over the years; it was prepared as a memorial by members of the Abbenrode home association and by teachers and students from the Fallstein grammar school in nearby Osterwieck. Information boards were drawn up and set up. The site is now a listed building.

Johannes Bienert - the mayor of Wiedelah - on the other hand fought to open the border quickly and, through his tireless efforts, managed to get the border fence opened on February 10, 1990 between Wiedelah and Wülperode at 10:00 a.m.
