The church was first mentioned in the 12th century, which was destroyed during the Hussite Wars. The church was rebuilt in the Gothic style in the 15th century. The west tower was completed between 1530-1535. It was destroyed in a fire. From 1718-1722 a new baroque tower was built.

The late Gothic, three-aisled hall church was consecrated in 1303 and renewed again and again after several fires. So, after the town fire in 1718, the tower structure was added in the baroque style. Inside there are two statues. One of the statues depicts Martin Luther, who is said to have preached twice in the church, which is well worth seeing.

The Marienkirche in the center of the city is the largest church in Weißenfels, it was consecrated in 1303 and in the 15th and 16th centuries. Century extensively renewed and enlarged.
